Still learning...

Learning is not attained by chance.
It must be sought with ardor and attended with diligence.

~Abigail Adams

Yesterday, Ashley, our oldest, received her BS degree with honors in nursing. The day before we attended her pinning, where I had the honor of pinning her. You see, it was a honor to be asked by her, not just because I'm her mom, but because I received my pin from the same institution thirty years ago. I graduated in nursing also.

Ashley is already an RN. She was in a small local liberal arts college finishing her junior year and newly married when she decided nursing was her calling. I guess her appetite was whetted toward the medical arts because she had become involved in Emergency Medical Services as an EMT when she was about 16 years old. She had entered the next level of EMS training when she decided to change majors, which necessitated changing schools. To get on with things, she decided to apply to the community college's nursing program, was accepted, and graduated in 2004.

Ashley has worked on a post-cardiac surgery floor since while continuing her climb up the EMS ladder to attain her paramedic's license. Coupled with that, she found a gift of and love for teaching as she began to teach EMS courses. To be able to teach nursing, which she found she now wanted to do, Ashley needed to finish her BS degree and get her MSN. She found an accessible RN-to-MSN program in 2007 and has now reached her first milestone. Her studies continue toward her MSN with anticipated graduation in the spring of 2010. Her school has been approved for a new doctorate in nursing practice program to begin in the fall of 2010. She has eyes on getting her DNP next.

As Abigail Adams said, you demonstrate the pursuit of learning with ardor--passion, enthusiasm. Don't ever lose that passion.

Congratulations, Ashley, for a job well-done!
Press on!

At her pinning: her daddy, her mama, and behind her aunt (my sister) and her grandmother (my 87 year old mom):

Given all things said...

What a sweet-looking family! Your children exhibit the diligence that you show every day.
