Suggestions, please

I am in the thick of school planning. Yesterday, I plotted the history year generally picking and choosing from Tapestry of Grace Years 2, 3, and 4. Yep. Since my assigned class is New World History and it covers years 1492 through the present, I felt using TOG was my best bet. That span of years is way too long, in my opinion, but maybe next year things will change a bit.

I decided to cover that span of history with the topics of people and events. The people will be the explorers, the colonists, the presidents, and the events will basically be the wars.

Today I plan to decide on the required literature we will use in English. Much of that will be historical literature that emphasizes our history studies. Then, I need to make a large list of
books the students can choose from for required free reading.

Now, my plea for suggestions. I will have the same group for history and English, but the English group will be split into two classes--the very average and the very above-average. I will need to make some distinction in assignments, particularly reading, for the two groups and wonder about a way to keep this straight and easy. After all, when I tell them to divide into the two groups, I don't want to have to name student names. That's way too time consuming. And, I don't want to label the two groups A and B, or 1 and 2. I'd prefer names. Interesting names. My first thought way Swallows and Amazons because the very above-average would "fly" or "soar" and the very average would be fighters. Of course, I would not tell them those reasons.

So, what do you think? Do you think it is even prudent? And what suggestions other than Swallows and Amazons can you give me?

By the way, if you are a Swallows and Amazons fan, check out these!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Goodbye, Mr. Chips last night was perfectly wonderful. Very well done. I saw an old black and white version years ago (at least I think it was black and white) but remember that it was a bit different than this 2003 one. So, I'm going to get the 1939 one which appears to be colorized and watch it to see.

I add Mr. Chips to my favorite teacher movies. My very favorite, though, remains To Serve Them All My Days which I blogged about here.

I like Swallow and Amazons. It's so much better than blue and gold. I can't think of a better suggestion. You could use geographical names but I like S & A better. I picked up all those books, first editions, with dust jackets in good shape for $1 a piece when I was in Seattle. Now I just have to read them!

Ahem, Janie? Have you mentioned To Serve Them All My Days before? I just added it to the top of my Netflix Q.

Yep, I gushed, err, blogged about To Serve Them All My Days here last September.

I like S & A too. Primarily because I love the book. The names are just so unique. I'll be giving it thought until school starts.

It's funny that you mentioned that PBS series! I just received a catalog from PBS today; unfortunately, I could not find that series. I'm glad you posted a link to it via Amazon. It sounds excellent! Where am I when these wonderful PBS series come along? I guess I'm usually looking for NOVA specials. Anyway, thank you so much for your excellent review of this series; I would not have heard about it otherwise.

I wish I could help you with TOG; in some ways I wish I had chosen that instead of Omnibus; that way I could work more easily with all three of our girls, ages 15, 13, and 10 years.

I see that you like the moon and I thought you would be interested, if you don't already know this, that the path of the moon is related to the path of the sun. The path of the full moon is the path of the sun six months earlier. The path of the new moon matches the path of the sun (you know they usually set together). The path of the first quarter and the last quarter are the path of the sun three months ago and in three months. (I remember that the moon we see, when the moon rises in the afternoon, lets us look at the past path of the sun and when the sun is up in the day it is the path of the future sun and it is hard to look into the future.)

I, too, like Swallow and Amazons! I always think names are better for groups.

Please, please blog any wisdom you have as you plan through TOG! We will be beginning Yr 2 Unit 1 in August. We are finishing up Ancient Rome this summer.
